With reading a holiday-themed slasher novella for book club, the launch of a new quarterly writing workshop, and editing help coming up at our next chapter meeting, HWA Oregon is keeping busy in November after a packed October of well-attended Halloween-related parties and readings.
The guest speaker at our September chapter meeting was Holley Cornetto, MLIS, MFA, Adjunct MFA Faculty at Southern New Hampshire University, and editor of five horror anthologies. She discussed with us how our writing could stand out in the slush pile.
The guest speaker at our October chapter meeting was Rebecca Zornow, an author and book coach who coached us on “How to Build an Author Business Plan.” Her presentation also included cool facts about ravens! Her latest novella, Landsome Roads, is a departure from her darker science fiction, but it makes good use of some darker elements and tension (romantic and more) in a delightful and humorous meta romantasy adventure.

Virtual Book Club
We’re reading Candy Cain Kills by Brian McAuley in November, and will discuss this slasher novella at the end of the month in our virtual book club.
Quarterly Writing Workshop
We launched our first virtual quarterly writing workshop in November. Four HWA Oregon members joined to read from their latest works and provide each other feedback, with the authors leading the discussion about their pieces with what feedback would be most important to them at this stage of the project.
